Current touring production
Following a successful 2007 tour, White Out Conditions returns for a 2008 Autumn tour. Under the artistic direction
of Rita Marcalo, White Out Conditions takes the spectator through a journey exuberating theatrical tension, powerful
visual designs and intricately choreographed movement, distorting reality along the way, and questioning perceptions
of nudity and sexuality.
White Out Conditions is driven by an interest in the notions of the beautiful and the grotesque, doing away with the
common sense binary opposition and instead suggesting a continuum between them.
The work challenges the audience with a series of visual scenarios from which serve to amuse, discomfort, attract and
repel – often simultaneously. These scenarios move in and out of sight, sparking strong emotional responses. For example:
- A physical comedian’s struggle with his ageing body.
- A woman whose foot is held by a rope tied to the ceiling.
- A woman constantly trying to find love by attempting to have sex with random people.
- A man playing the drums on his own bottom.
- A woman who can’t stop eating plums.
There is an emphasis on the collaboration between performers, choreographer and designer, resulting in an intertwining
of set and costume design, especially composed eclectic music, and performers of different backgrounds (one actor/comedian,
two trained dancers, two physical theatre performers).
